Welcoming Spring

I love to live seasonally as much as possible. Some things just seem more “right” at certain times of the year. Since this year is about WELCOME for me, I thought I would show you a few ways I welcome each season. This process definitely evolves over time, and I have more ideas for how to welcome seasons in the future. However, here are some things I’m welcoming right now as spring begins where I live.

Spring in my part of the world brings warmer days. Gardens are being prepared, and Easter is the main spring holiday for us. We also have one birthday in our house for spring. For me, spring starts when weather hits closer to 50 degrees and above and ends sometime around the end of school but before Memorial Day.

FOOD
One project I did last year was to build a family cookbook by placing our recipes seasonally through the year. We have traditional meals we cook for different holidays. And, if the holiday is held elsewhere, we have traditional foods we take for those holiday celebrations.

Some of my favorites from our spring recipes are Oven-Roasted Asparagus, right when asparagus is in season, and Lemon Sheet Cake, because lemon seems like such a spring taste.

Our Easter wouldn’t be complete without homemade cinnamon rolls before church and a dinner including at least Ham, Hashbrown Casserole, and Pickled Eggs.

For tea time, I might have a floral or strawberry tea and Lemon Scones.

CLOTHING
I typically change out my outfits only twice a year, for spring and summer then for fall and winter. Of course, there are a few things that I wear only in fall and only for the Christmas season so there is a little overlap there. I wear dresses and skirts only so colors and materials matter to me for warmth in the colder months and coolness in the warmer months. I generally don’t bring out the “springiest” of my outfits until Easter, and I also make Easter the day I start wearing white shoes. I know, Miss Manners says Memorial Day, but who wants to wear springy colors with winter shoes? Some rules are meant to be broken.

I love feminine dress and these two YouTube influencers give me much inspiration even if our styles and standards are slightly different. They each collaborated on transitioning to spring clothing, so I’ll share those videos here:

MUSIC
I love music, so I’m a Spotify fan. I can build my own playlists for practically anything. The idea of seasonal playlists came to me rather recently, though, from blogger and author, Myquillyn Smith (aka The Nester). She actually publicly shared her seasonal playlists, and I find them enjoyable for quiet background listening. I’m not sure how she fashions them, but they each seem to fit perfectly with the season. Here is her Spring Playlist if you want to check it out.

HOME

We spent last spring remodeling and we’re spending this spring moving, so changing out decorations for spring will have to happen next year. However, simple ways to prepare my home for the season are to change out throw pillows and blanket throws and change the wreath on the door. I also love to have candles burning. Spring scents to me are flowery and delicate. If I get a fruity scent, it will have something to do with blueberry or lemon. Fresh flowers are a favorite of mine, too. Spring flowers are some of my favorites, but they are so short-lived! I hope to grow a few spring flowers at my new home, but I get fresh flowers from the store or a florist as well to set around the house.

What do you do to welcome spring into your life and home?
